Nailed It! [West VA] - Day 5

January 9, 2014

Thursday. January 9th. So close to the end, how did the time fly?!

So much progress doe. After the slightly heavier mood of yesterday, we were anxious to get going and accomplish some major projects today … and we did work!

There were three major areas: gym, wifi café, and nook areas. We kind of scattered all over. In the gym, we climbed the newly constructed scaffolding and worked with wires, hooks, and tracking to  extend the tracking of the drop ceiling. Dan’s long arms came in super handy. It is really something to be up on that high level! There were some planks between the two sets of scaffolding. They were secure, but free-standing, so walking on them was a little nerve-wracking – more for some, less for others. It took me a little while, but I know JoAnn and Marta felt totally comfortable with working at that height! When the iPod played the song “Happy,” I felt like us dancing on that scaffolding would have been a perfect addition to the music video.

The wifi café needed sanding and more carpet glue to be removed. Folks, if you are ever EVER debating between hardwood floors and carpeting, just be extra careful if you pick carpeting. The glue really likes to stick to hardwood and clog the sanding machine. That room is making progress though, and it is really motivating to see the difference from the beginning to now!

The nook areas were areas in the wall that had originally housed lockers, but we were redoing them to be nicely finished niches in the wall. The areas had beams, so we had to put in insulation and plywood. After the insulation was installed and stapled, the bottom of the nook had to be measured, marked onto a piece of plywood, cut with circular saw, and then adjusted as necessary.

Megan eventually became the expert circular saw user, teaching other people how to do it, and Travis was ever seen with power drill in hand, ready to fix the plywood into each niche (and never complaining when Megan and I made him redo pieces a couple times over ..). Meanwhile, Diana, Marta, and Morgan would be cutting and putting in more insulation.

The wifi room was a lot of hard work. After realizing there was still too much glue for the sander, more glue had to be removed. Heidi and Bridget probably had the most intense concentration removing that glue. Rico and Van used the sander as much as the floor allowed.

That night, we all got gussied up and went out for hibachi! We went to “Fujiyama.” One of the hibachi chefs was hilarious and referred to himself as “Ricky Martin.” Suffice to say, Livin La Vida Loca was played on the way back in the car.
