So, it's about 10:30P.M. on March 10, 2012 --also known as the night before the beginning of a life-altering experience called ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAKS: WASHINGTON D.C.! I'm currently typing this amidst a gentle chaos of D.C. hunger and homelessness articles and laundry, taking a momentary break from suitcase-packing olympics. Because, to be quite honest, it really has just hit me: this is it. The trip we've been discussing for weeks, the build-up of excitement and anxiety, the bonding and discussions during pre-trip meetings, it's all being justified within a mere few hours. As cliche as the age-old adage is, time truly does fly, and when you realize it, you're simply left to wonder.
You know, after the tons of articles and activities we've done that have exposed us to the major problem of hunger and homelessness in our nation's capitol, it's kind of hard not to feel personally invested in the task we've been delegated. I know I speak for all of my fellow ASBDC members when I say that this trip is more than just what can be considered a productive use of a Spring Break. It really has developed into an opportunity for us to work with each other, a group of people we otherwise perhaps would not have never known, to contribute positively to a passion that strongly binds us all. Not only is it a passion and a genuine concern, but also a humbling regard and recognition of our position within humanity, our privilege, and our moral obligation to help and learn from those that we are helping.
With that being said, I must admit, the enormity of the potential of such an experience is quite intimidating indeed. And yet it's an intimidation that I believe we all embrace, knowing that at the conclusion of the trip, the culmination of our efforts and the memories that we will inevitably make during our time in D.C. will definitely make this an experience to forever remember.
